I have SBG for 2 seasons and really enjoy it. I have a formal education in Horticulture. I work at a local garden center, in the Landscape department. And look forward to refining my SBG skills.
The pictures I have chosen are from the 2017 growing season. I had a tremendous year with my straw bales! The 2017 growing season was that of ex streams for this region of the country. We had a very wet spring, i.e. flooding 3 times, and a drought that lasted for about one and a half months in the summer.
Many gardeners, in the area, had crop failures with their vine vegetables, due to diseases and pests. I did not have these problems! My pumpkin, and cucumber plants had very minimal to no powdery mildew issues, for most of the season. And no pest issues. I grew these plants vertically, stinging them up on a twine line that was strung from fence post to fence post.
I watered my SBG more when there was the summer drought, and top dressed with fertilizer, once, in the summer.
My straw bale gardens grew like a tropical jungle this 2017 season. …it was a little overwhelming, because it just kept growing and growing and growing!
