I’m from Northeast Ohio and love all things “straw bale.” Someday I will live in a straw bale house. In the meantime, when I first learned about straw bale gardening, I decided to give it a try. My mother had the perfect location, wanted a vegetable garden, but didn’t want to be on her hands and knees pulling weeds (she’s 86), and was eager to participate.
We found Joel Karsten’s book, watched his webinar, and got started, taking the seasoning and watering instructions to heart. I believe that was the key to our success. Mom loved her straw bale garden!
I built a small one on my own property last year, too, and plan to double the size of it this year. We learned how important support for the plants is, so I will be adding the T-post and wire frames this year, giving the plants more room to grow and climb. I’m happy to share what I’m learning.
