We have two years of experience with the Straw Bale Gardens, here in Las Vegas, NV.
We grew Tomatoes, of course, as well as zucchini, cucumbers, spinach, green onions, and a wide variety of herbs.
Due to the extreme heat and UV index, we utilized a Swamp Cooler (Evaporative Cooler) as well as shade cloth. The combination worked very well. Today is Nov 30, 2016, and we are still getting tomatoes.
Next year we plan to double our bale count, and to grow some vegetables with cooling and some without cooling. The ones without cooling will probably not make it thru August.
Joel’s technique is amazing in that it is exceptionally successful. Far better results than can be obtained from soil, raised bed,or container. Plus, it can be done anywhere; even on concrete, on a patio, or in a shopping cart.
I am not aware of any technique that is so flexible, and successful.
