We first learned about the the straw bale garden option in a basic gardening class we attended at the local YMCA, early spring of this year. We did further online research and found Joel’s book and ordered it. We’d been doing raised bed gardening and earth boxes, but decided to give the bales a try. We followed the book guidance precisely, starting out with 8 bales, and were really impressed with how easy, productive and fun our harvest has been (tomatoes, peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, and butternut squash). We will be enthusiastically expanding next season!
