I grew up on a dairy farm helping my Dad with all the farm chores and field chores. My Mom had a huge vegetable garden that I also helped with. Planting, weeding, harvesting and processing were all my summer jobs. After moving away from home and getting my first house I wanted to get back to working with the soil again. I became a certified Master Gardener in 1989 and then obtained the Lifetime Master Gardener status 10 yrs ago.
For 15+ years I have volunteered at the Cedar Valley Arboretum in Waterloo IA maintaining 2 herb gardens, hostas gardens, several other display gardens and helping where needed in the gardens. Three years ago I volunteered to put in a display garden of different types of raised beds for educational purposes for the public visiting the gardens. It has grown from 2 raised beds to 4 raised beds and last year I added the straw bale garden. It was a trial and error as the weather did not cooperate to get it started early. I will be doing it again this year hoping to improve the display from last year as I learned by trial and error. My goal is to give the public a chance to learn that there are many different ways they can grow fresh vegetables without having to have a huge yard.
