From the time I was little, I’ve always loved growing things. I remember transplanting wild strawberries from the field and being fascinated when they returned the following year. I would find everything in our kitchen pantry that would grow…popcorn, beans and potatoes. To my parents’ surprise, there would suddenly be a garden in the back yard dirt pile. Evan as a young girl, I thought plants were nothing short of miraculous!

Now, I’m a mom of two teenage boys. When expressing to a friend my desire to grow some of our own food, but also my frustration with lack of good dirt, tiller, etc., he suggested I plant a straw bale garden. No new dirt, tilling equipment or weeding required! I thought to myself, “Yes, I can do this!”. I bought Joel’s book and the rest is history!

Health and wellness is my passion, and I am currently studying to be a holistic health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Taking control of the quality of our food by growing some of our own is the beginning of bringing real, whole food back to America’s table! I grow for my family’s health and for our budget. Having an abundance of vegetables from our straw bale garden has brought a new level of creativity to my kitchen, too! This is a new, mindful way of eating and living for my family, thanks to Joel Karsten and straw bale gardening. I am excited about sharing and teaching others about a healthier way of living with straw bale gardening.
